I love anything Sweeney Todd and I have most of the versions available. This story was quite good but the storyline seemed broken up a bit to me. I'm not an expert and perhaps I should give it more stars because of that. I just found the story did not run as smoothly and if I didn't already know the other stories of Sweeney Todd, I would have been a bit lost.Product details

The String of Pearls
Sweeney Todd is the antagonist for the novel The String of Pearls. He is known in London as the demon barber, for he sits people in his chair and slits their throat with his sharpened blade. The story begins with the missing man, Lieutenant Thornhill. He has a delivery for miss Johanna Oakley from her lover, Mark Ingestrie, who was assumed, lost at sea. Johanna and one of Thornhill's mates, Colonel Jeffery, set sail to look for him. Johanna dresses up as a boy to satisfy her curiosity of Sweeney Todd. She ends up working for him and finds out that her lover, Mark Ingestrie, has been locked up in the cellar working as a cook making pies out of human flesh for him. Mark tells the customers the truth about the store and Sweeney Todd. Mrs. Lovett is poisoned by Sweeney Todd and he himself is hanged for his doings. Johanna and Mark feel relieved and live happily ever after.
My feelings about this book are rather scattered. When Sweeney Todd is going around killing people, it is intriguing and makes me relate other movies and books I have read previously. But I love the adventure. I cannot really relate the book to my life in the same situation because I do not live in London nor make pies of human flesh nor slit people's throats with a razor. But if you look at the romantic part of this story, it is much like Pirates of the Caribbean. Will goes searching for Elizabeth as she is captured by the pirates. Such as Johanna searches for Mark lost at sea. Todd's apprentice, Tobias, is relative to me because he is a chefs assistant.
Well it was written a really long time ago so the language and the way it's told is like a Victorian story.
It is a very well structured and well written novel you can't miss
The original Sweeney Toddy appeared serialized in a penny dreadful. Despite multiple authors the book is surprisingly well-written. The characters are intriguing and the plots moves swiftly. Anyone familiar with Sondheim's musical will recognize some of the characters, but Sondheim invented at least a partially sympathetic anti-hero while the original Sweeney is simply a greedy cold-blooded killer.
I've seen three versons of the movie and the one on PBS was the hands down winner. I recieved a for a gift from my children...best gift ever...and decided to try reading the story as it was first written. A little research reveals that the story was written for a magazine or news paper in several episodes and was popular enough to go to a successful book form. After reading only 5 chapters of this "book" I can really see the difference in the layout and really enjoy the work. This beats any of the movies and I can't wait to get back to my reading, so I'm off...
I love anything Sweeney Todd and I have most of the versions available. This story was quite good but the storyline seemed broken up a bit to me. I'm not an expert and perhaps I should give it more stars because of that.
