It's the punch you don't see coming that drops you. Any fighter can tell you that. And Mickey Watts isn't just any fighter; he's one of the best in mixed martial arts, a top contender who seems to have it all looks, brains and rich girlfriend who's crazy about him. The fact his family is mobbed-up to its Irish-Italian eyebrows has never been a problem...until Mick throws one punch too many and finds that some debts can only be paid in blood.

I saw this book on a Book Gorilla deal, and, while normally it isn’t something I would’ve picked up (I don’t like MMA fighting, and even turn away from matches if they are playing in a bar), I was intrigued by the book cover. So I checked out the reviews, and saw that other women who also don’t like MMA loved this book. This intrigued me further, but I was still reticent to pick up the book, because I figured Watson was some guy who—just because he could fight well—thought that meant he could write a book about it well, too…and doesn’t THAT turn into an eye-rolling experience. So I read the “look inside” sample and, wow, was totally sold.Yes, this book has a good amount of violence in it, but those scenes aren’t gratuitous. Every scene is used to forward the plot and deepen characterization, and the fights are written, just, dang, breath-holdingly well.
Every day people are faced with decisions. Big or small, we’re all always making decisions that lead us down one path or another. One night Mickey, the hero of CAGE LIFE, makes a decision that seems right enough—to look out for his cousin and friend—but it ends up unraveling his life. Here is where the book delves into the Mafia Life...but the story does *not* read like some two-bit Al Capone story. Far from it.
Watson writes this unraveling with pitch-perfect pacing and heartfelt emotion. It is at times difficult to read for how real it is, but un-put-down-able all the same. In fact, Watson’s writing as a whole is utterly superb, both his skillful use of strong prose and rich vocabulary—Watson invariably transports you to the all the highs and lows of Mickey’s situation so you are THERE. I was utterly blown away.
If you are a woman who prefers books that plod along with birdies twittering in the air, then this story isn’t for you. But if you don’t mind high action that takes place on the grittier side of life about a man who you can really root for, then pick up CAGE LIFE, for sure!!
I highly recommend if for both men and women.
Now the author just needs to put the book on Audible so my husband can enjoy it!

Cage Life Cage Life Series Volume 1 Miles Watson 9781522858584 Books Reviews
Definitely suspenseful! Miles develops the characters so you want to learn more about them, you want to know what happens next. Not at all what I was expecting and I'm excited to read more by Miles Watson.
Tough, gritty story of life and death on the streets. A young man is tested and initially found wanting, but through grit and determination fought his way back, or maybe not!
This story is grim, grim, grim, and so brilliantly told that it swamps you with poetic imagery and language describing, decay, filth, degradation, shame, and unremitting violence. And a kind of inside-out redemption. Absolutely riveting.
Gripping is the word for this thriller--the damn thing wouldn't let me go even after I was finished. Realism in every aspect of the book. If you're into martial arts, you'll enjoy this book. The mafia scenes conveyed the moral ambivalence of gangsters well. The question is am I going to get whacked or not? I know from experience it is very unsettling to be hanging around with people who may kill you in a minute without a second thought.
Sweetbabyjesus I felt like I needed a cigarette after the first couple of chapters. I literally sat back and exhaled, setting it down for a moment. I'm not really a fan of fighting - too squeamish - but the way he writes about it, I just got swept up in it, like I had to keep going.
I'm glad I did, because he goes on to paint a vivid picture of a world I know nothing about. Interesting characters, real dialogue, he creates a whole portrait with just a few, telling details.
A great book about redemption and things we do for respect that really cause us Trouble in life,it also has some Awesome descriptions of MMA fights,in the thick of the story it's a Violent crime story involving the Mob and there dirty ways,a true testament that crime doesn't pay,if you enjoy action packed crime thrillers this is the book for you
What a great read! I'm a fan of boxing/fighting so I had to pick up this book. Right off the rip, the author throws you in the ring and makes your jaw and kidneys hurt like hell as you learn the sport one punch and kick at a time.
Then you go on the hero's journey with Mickey Watts as he tries to make a name for himself in MMA fighting. Everything is moving along in his favor (almost) until he has a brush with the mob.
From there, it's hard to put the book down. As a reader, you're introduced to the New York boroughs, the city streets, night clubs, boxing gyms and even Madison Square Garden. The author obviously did his share of research because I think I could walk right into some of the joints that he laid out with his exceptional prose - though I'm not sure that 'Gino' or 'Kraut' would welcome me.
The latter half of the book was like a drug; I had to ration the final pages because I didn't want it to end. The protagonist, Mickey Watts is in too deep, and the author spells out quite a convincing ending that you just don't see coming. This book screams sequel, at least I hope so.
All and all, a great hook for the reader, excellent setting and scene construction, great backstory to better appreciate the protagonist, superb characterization as well as authentic dialogue, and a well balanced cadence makes "Cage Life" a thrilling debut novel.
